Link sharing sites is probably the easiest way to build a social network these days, if of course you can get users to join and participate.
Shaarli is a PHP script that uses a flat-file system to store information about shared links, built following the general guidelines and UI style that have been once at the base of Digg, Reddit, or Delicious.
The entire system is quite easy to setup, features some basic administration and moderation tools, and also comes with a browser bookmarklet for easily sharing links without having to go to the Shaarli interface beforehand.
Shaarli allows users to easily share links, images, add descriptions, and categorize their content using tags.
It also features support for RSS feeds, Atom feeds, PubSubHubbub, and a bunch of other protocols and features.
Because all the data is stored in flat files locally, the entire system is quite fast, and also easy to migrate to new servers.
All in all, Shaarli is quite a nice tool to have around, a simple community building application, helping your users share interesting Web pages with one another.
